Solar Panel Cleaning System

An engineered robotic system for cleaning photovoltaic panels — designed for controlled brush contact, uneven field surfaces, and reliable field operation.

Overview

Dust accumulation on photovoltaic panels measurably reduces their energy output. In arid regions, cleaning is a recurring operational burden. This project develops a robotic cleaning system that moves across panel arrays and cleans their surfaces with a rotating brush under controlled contact.

Problem

PV panels in the field are large, fragile, tilted at varying angles, and often installed on uneven ground. Manual cleaning is slow and water-intensive, while naive mechanical contact can damage glass surfaces. Any viable system must adapt to surface irregularity, control contact carefully, and operate outdoors for extended periods.

Engineering challenge

The core engineering challenge is controlling the interaction between a rotating brush and a delicate, uneven photovoltaic surface — while the whole mechanism moves, vibrates, and copes with dust, heat, and water. Structural stiffness, vibration behavior, actuation, and sensing must be designed as one system.

Approach

  • 01Mechanism and structural design around a rotating brush cleaning head with controlled contact.
  • 02Analysis and simulation of vibration and contact behavior before committing to hardware.
  • 03Iterative prototyping of the cleaning head and its actuation.
  • 04Electromechanical integration of actuation, sensing, and water delivery into a field-operable system.

Technical highlights

  • Rotating-brush cleaning head with controlled contact
