Insulator Washing Drone
An aerial robotics development for washing high-voltage insulators — combining a cleaning mechanism, water delivery, and careful positioning in a single robotic system.
Overview
Contaminated high-voltage insulators are a serious reliability risk for power networks. Washing them today often requires line shutdowns or risky manual work at height. This project explores an aerial robotic approach: bringing the cleaning system to the insulator, rather than the crew.
Problem
Insulators must be cleaned without damaging them, without unsafe proximity to energized equipment, and often without taking lines out of service. An aerial platform must position a cleaning mechanism precisely, manage water delivery, and remain stable — all while interacting with a delicate target.
Engineering challenge
The engineering challenge is the integration: a multi-rotor aircraft, a cleaning mechanism, water delivery, and sensing must work together as one controlled system, with the physical interaction between the tool and the insulator carefully managed.
Approach
- 01System-level design of the aerial platform and cleaning tool as one integrated machine.
- 02Mechanical design of the cleaning mechanism and water delivery path.
- 03Positioning and sensing development for controlled approach and contact.
- 04Progressive ground and field validation of the integrated system.
